Accreditation of Field Epidemiology Training Programs

Accreditation of Field Epidemiology Training Programs

The African Field Epidemiology Network, held a workshop from 17 - 22 July 2017 in Kampala, Uganda to support its member programs prepare for the FELTP accreditation application process.

Accreditation is an opportunity for field epidemiology training programs to align with common standards that support quality training and increased recognition of the value of FETPs to support country public health priorities. The process and standards for accreditation were developed over a five-year period with input from the global network of programs and partners. The standards are grouped into four main domains: Management, Infrastructure and Operations, Integration with Public Health Service, Staffing and Supervision and Selection and Training of Residents

The accreditation process consists of four key stages: Program completes a self-assessment (accreditation readiness assessment), program submits an accreditation application if deemed ready to apply and an external review team completes a thorough site visit of the applying program(s). The TEPHINET Global Accrediting Body reviews and makes the final decision to confer accreditation status or not.

AFENET together with a consultant from TEPHINET facilitated the meeting and oriented FETP faculty from AFENET Member Programs on the various accreditation packages.  After the training, the selected faculty will work closely with AFENET and TEPHINET to ensure their Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programs (FELTPs) become accredited and work to maintain the set standards. As result of the orientation, some faculty were maintained as certified assessors to support the TEPHINET global accreditation excise.
