The epidemiological situation of COVID-19 in Angola is characterized by a progressive increase in the number of confirmed cases and detection of the first 8 cases of local transmission, after an increase in laboratory testing capacity.
On 4 May 2020, 35 confirmed cases, 2 deaths, and 11 recoveries were recorded in Angola. As a result, 944 people are being followed in institutional quarantine.
From March - April 2020, Angola FETP alumni and residents were integrated in the Rapid Response Teams of the Ministry of Health to combat COVID-19. Two Angola FELTP residents supported the head of the Epidemiology Department of the National Directorate of Public Health in the investigation of the death of a cleaner at the Institutional Quarantine Center. The case was discharged.
The Angola FETP residents held Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) training sessions for health professionals in district Hospitals. They also held training sessions for district health professionals in collecting and processing data.
Residents are following up travelers from abroad in home quarantine, investigating suspicious case contacts, rumors and reports of violation of compliance with home quarantine and tracking of contacts via telephone of confirmed cases in hotels in Luanda.
Residents are also supporting infection control and disinfection at the Military Central Hospital, transferring suspected COVID 19 patients to the institutional quarantine centers, following up of passengers on humanitarian flights from abroad, registration and following up of 393 interprovincial travel passengers.
One resident is supporting Laboratory teams from the National Institute for Health Research (INIS) at the National School of Public Health to collect samples from passengers coming from Portugal in the last 3 weeks.
