Senegal Field Epidemiology Training Program 2nd Francophone Scientific Conference

Senegal Field Epidemiology Training Program 2nd Francophone Scientific Conference

The Senegal Field Epidemiology Training Program (Senegal FETP) held its 2nd Francophone Scientific Conference from 5 – 6 February 2018 at the Ngor Diarama, Dakar, Senegal.

The purpose of the conference was to strengthen the network of FETP Frontline participants and agents involved in surveillance in the countries of the sub-region. The main objective was to create a platform to share fieldwork experiences from the different cohorts and countries, review the implementation of FETPs in the sub-region as well as discuss the future direction of the Senegal Program

Present at the conference were over 100 participants among whom were Senegal FETP trainees and graduates as well as Resident Advisors and graduates from the following FETPs : Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote D’ivoire, Guinee, Mali and Togo.

The Senegal FETP is one of 8 other FETPs that have been operating in the Francophone West Africa Region since 2015. The recent Ebola outbreak in the West Africa sub-region exposed the inadequacies of the health systems in the affected countries, in particular, as well as those in Africa. The Ebola outbreak led to the need to establish comprehensive capacity for prevention, detection, and response to communicable disease threats - to prevent future outbreaks and epidemics.

The Frontline Senegal FETP was launched in Janaury 2016. To date, 5 cohorts have been trained. The first cohort began in February 2016. The training targeted district physicians (46) and surveillance focal points (68), including veterinarians (19) and the other sectors of the environment (2), trade (1) and the Armed Forces (2). Participants have come from 74 of the 76 districts in Senegal.

The conference was graced by the Ministry Chief of Staff of the Senegal Minister of Health and Social Action - Mr Alassane Mbengue, US Ambassador, Dr Tulinabo S. Mushingi, CDC Senegal Country Director, Dr. Michael Kinzer, Director of USAID, AFENET Executive Director, Dr Chima Ohuabunwo, Director Senegal FETP, Dr Mamoudou Ndiaye, Resident Advisor Senegal FETP, Dr Babacar Ndoye and AFENET Technical Coordinator for Francophone, Dr Ditu Kazambu.
