In the period 25 June - 12 July 2019, the Mozambique FELTP conducted an investigation into the occurrence of suspected cases of pellagra in Ndedja community in Nhamatanda, one of the refugee districts affected by Cyclone Idai. Pellagra, or niacin (vitamin B3) deficiency, is a potentially fatal disease which is now rare in the developed world. Diagnosis is often delayed owing to non-specific symptoms and low clinical suspicion. The classic triad of dermatitis, diarrhea and dementia is not always present.
Mozambique FELTP residents performed active search for suspected cases, developed a case-control study to identify the probable risk factors for the disease and to propose measures of prevention and control.
