Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) 2018

Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) 2018

The Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) 2018 led by the  Government of Nigeria, Funded by PEPFAR and Global Funds and implemented by a consortium of Implementing Partners was effectively implemented across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria in six months. There were over 200,000 respondents making the NAIIS the largest ever population-based AIDS survey to be ever conducted in the world.

AFENET Nigeria successfully led the Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization (ACSM) component of the NAIIS to record a response rate of over 90%.

His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria released the results of the survey on  March 14, 2019. The presidential announcement held at the prestigious banquet hall of the presidential villa and Dr Patrick Nguku, Regional Technical Coordinator and Senior Resident Advisor (NFELTP) who was a member of the Survey Steering Committee joined the president on the stage to release the result.

The success of the NAIIS 2018 was predicated on the success of the advocacy, communication and social mobilization, especially into several hard to reach and security volatile areas which previous survey failed to reach. AFENET Nigeria pulled experience from organizing Kaduna AIDS Indicator Survey (KADAIS) to develop a unique and effective community mobilization strategy that incorporated existing health, social, communication and state structures into a robust mobilization methodology which all stakeholders trusted and cooperated with.

AFENET Nigeria also contributed her wealth of experience and epidemiology skills in all other areas of the survey including Proposal Writing, SOP Development, Data Management, Laboratory and ICT. Many of the Central, Zonal and Field staff have a link with AFENET either as officers with experience working on AFENET led KADAIS and LAGAIS or as residents/graduates of AFENET's NFELTP program. This contributed immensely to the success of the NAIIS 2018.

It is also evidence of AFENET Nigeria’s rigorous and extensive research and epidemiology competence that the HIV/AIDS prevalence of 1.1% for Kaduna state that AFENET Nigeria found when it conducted the Kaduna AIDS Indicator Survey (KADAIS) is what the NAIIS Consortium found for Kaduna state.

AFENET Nigeria remains committed to AFENET’s mandate of creating a healthier Africa.
