ACoDD Teams Respond to Ebola Outbreak in DRC

Following the announcement a 9th outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in DR Congo by the Minister of Health, the DRC Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program sent residents to participate in the response to the outbreak in the field. Residents were deployed to various states namely: Mbandaka, Bikoro and Iboko and the capital of Kinshasa.

Team in Mbandaka

The epidemiological situation as of 15 May 2018 in Mbandaka, reported 44 cases including 23 deaths. The laboratory confirmed to date 3 (2 per PCR and 1 per GenExpert). 527 contacts were identified in Mbandaka alone. The team were faced with a major incident on 19 May 2018 were 1 EVD positive case ran away in Mbandaka. All strategies were engaged to get the patient back to the EVD Center of Treatment.

On 21 May 2018, the résidents participated in Vaccination activities in Mbandaka and subsequently conducted the following activities : 

  • Screening of the Contact’s and case Data base
  • Harmonization of list of candidate to Vaccination
  • Supervision of contact tracing
  • Investigation of Alerts
    Briefing of ReCo (Relais communautaire: in charge of contact tracing) and other staff
  • Support to the Laboratory team
  • Surveillance on PoE
  • Support to Lab Analysis

Residents in Bikoro and Iboko participated in :

  • Briefing of ReCo (May 21, 2018) 
  • Active Surveillance in the community and health facilities
  • Investigation of alerts
  • Listting of Contacts
  • Contact tracing 

Team in Kinshasa

 A team of three from the FETP including : Dr Léopold Lubula, Dr Gaston and Dr Alain Magazani were deployed to Kinshasa city to respond to the outbreak. The team participated in 

  • Coordination of the Surveillance commission
  • Update and standardization of surveillance Tools and strategies
  • Support to surveillance plan (including preparation of Resonse in Kinshasa)
  • Collect, harmonization and reporting of Field activities of surveillance team
  • Briefing of Communication teams and Journalists
