AFENET Welcomes Executive Director, Dr. Chima John Ohuabunwo

AFENET is pleased to announce that Dr. Chima John Ohuabunwo joined the team as the new Executive Director, from 1 August 2017. Dr. Ohuabunwo received the instrument of office from Dr. Olivia Namusisi – Former Acting Executive Director, and Director Programs on 24 August 2017 at the AFENET Secretariat. Present at the handover ceremony was Prof. Tshimanga Mufuta - AFENET Board Chairman, members of the management team and secretariat staff. 

Dr. Ohuabunwo joins AFENET at a significant time of the network’s growth, currently with 16 Field Epidemiology Laboratory Training Programs (FELTPs) and operations in 31 African countries.

Dr. Chima Ohuabunwo is a United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-trained medical epidemiologist and a health systems consultant. He served as Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Atlanta GA and also served as adjunct Associate Director for Research at the Grady Health System Center for Clinical Performance Improvement; an MSM partner-Teaching Hospital.


Dr Ohuabunwo was the premier Program Coordinator of the CDC-supported National Stop Transmission of Polio (NSTOP) program in Nigeria implemented through the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (NFELTP) in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA). He served as a foundation member of the National Polio Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Nigeria as part of his NSTOP responsibilities.  He recently served as the Coordinator for the Case Management and Infection Prevention team of the Nigeria Ebola Emergency Operations Center that worked with the public, international and local partners to contain the July 2014 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) Outbreak in Nigeria under the aegis of the Federal Ministry of Health’s  Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC). 


Dr Ohuabunwo has had a long history with the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) as he served as the first Resident Advisor of the Ghana Field Epidemiology Training Program, African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET). With a vast history and experience, he emphasizes team work and advocacy for the African Field Epidemiology Network. (AFENET). He urged all staff to be ambassadors for AFENET as well as continue the hard work and commitment towards achieving the organizations goals.
