Overview

The Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (FELTP) in Tanzania is a competency based training programme in Applied Epidemiology and Public Health Laboratory Management. It was designed in recognition of the need to strengthen the Epidemiologic and Laboratory management capacity of Tanzania to meet the challenges of the current, emerging and reemerging infectious diseases and other public health problems.

The FELTP is a collaboration of the Tanzania Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW), National Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which has designed two masters’ degree programmes with one track Applied Epidemiology and the other in Laboratory Management and Epidemiology.

Program Description

The FELTP is a 24 month, full time in-service training. The programme is divided into 5 distinct didactic sessions where both the Epidemiology and Laboratory Management residents are taught together. An additional 3 didactic sessions are taught separately to the two groups. Blocks of field placements follow these didactic sessions, to enable residents apply their knowledge as well as develop their core competencies including problem solving skills.

Goals

The goals of the Tanzania FELTP are to develop institutionalized capacity to train Public Health Professionals in Applied or Field Epidemiology and Public Health Laboratory Management;

To provide Epidemiological and Laboratory services to the Public Health systems at national, regional, district and local levels. The course aims to build technical and managerial skills required by senior employees of the Ministry of Health, to assist them in carrying out their duties, and specifically in the use of epidemiological data for public health planning purposes.
